Project: Cambodia Escapade

TIMELINE

This would be the unofficial notes and planner for my Cambodia trip this June. I already have the etickets to Phnom Penh. Together with four friends, we would have an overnight stay on Kuala Lumpur on June 29th and on June 30, we’ll sleepover at Phnom Penh. At or around 1PM, we will be leaving the city, have a bus ride to Siem Reap on July 1st. We’ll go back to Kuala Lumpur on July 3rd and probably have a plane ride to Kota Kinabalu. We will have an overnight there and go back to reality, I mean the Philippines on July 4th. These below notes are not mine but are researches coming from blogs and forums.

TO RESEARCH

One day is not enough to explore the famous Angkor Wat, but some says the opposite.

HAGGLE

Haggle as much as you can and to the best of your ability because the locals already know the rounds. They would raise their prices up to as much as 300% if they know you’re a tourist and you can afford it! What’s interesting is, Asians there won’t rip off Asians as much as they rip off the white people.

BEST BUYS

If you’ve got money, try buying jewels specifically rubies and emeralds. Cambodia is a major source of these jewelry but I don’t have much money with me, so I’ll just go buying weird stuff that are made of rocks.

EXPENSES

The airport tax is $25 so prepare extra cash.

For food, $5-6 dollars is a full meal on restaurants, the fancier the place, the more expensive it is. For shopping, the central market is a good place to buy souvenirs. Relatively cheap, a pair of apsara figurines for $6 each, you just need to bargain a lot. For transportation, you need to hire a driver to see Angkor Wat. If you want a motor ride, it’s $8/day. If tuktuk, $15. Entrance fee to the Angkor Complex is $20 for 1 day, $40 for 3 days, $70 for 1 week. The entrance ticket should be used on consecutive days. For tour guides (which is optional, but most people suggest that a tourist should get one at least for 1 day), usual is $25 per day. Just haggle if you can.

HOSTELS/INNS

DEAD FISH INN: Staying at the Dead Fish Inn costs $12 per night, still you can get a room for as cheap as $8. A/C room costs $15.

HCMC: Hong Han Hotel, tourists say that their coffee, which they serve in the morning, is great. Though I am not a coffee person. Staffs are very friendly. Should tries include spring rolls of Lac Thien, a resto at the right of Hong Han; Pho Noodels which you can buy also at the right of the hotel. No elevetor.

ROSY GUESTHOUSE: At Siem Reap. Service is also great as what the tourists say. Staffs speak in good English accent. Has a resto inside. Should tries include Amok Chicken and their legendary mashed potato.

VILLA SIEM REAP: They offer a 3-day super value package which costs $110. It includes 4D 3N accommodation in a superior room, breakfasts, packed lunch and drinks with yummy and fresh sandwiches and cold beverages which they put in an “esky” or a cooler, a dedicated tuktuk driver who will take you to the temples everyday, a wine, cheese and olives pack which you can consume at Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm (the temple in Tomb Raider) or the Srah Srang river at sunset. The package also include a choice between an elephant ride or a hot air balloon ride. Villa Siem Reap has the best location since it’s near the Central Market, Old Market, Night Market and Pub Street (where the restaurants are located and where tourists go to at night). They have really friendly and helpful staff.

TOURIST TIPS and SHARE

Favorite temples were Angkor Wat, for sentimental reasons, Ta Prohm, Bayon and Banteay Samre, and Phnom Bakong, a temple perched on top of a very high hill. You may get a bit templed out in the process though, so you may also enjoy shopping at the old market, and watch a Cambodian Cultural Show with buffet which costs $12.

You can try your lunch at Blue Pumpkin. Their yogurt banana shake and spring rolls are so good. Try buying lotsa breads and pastries and croissant.

One day is enough to visit the most famous temples, Angkor Wat. If you’ll spend two or three days, you have enough.

If you’ve been to the Royal Palace of Thailand, tourists who have gone there suggest not to go anymore on Cambodia’s Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda of Phnom Penh. They are almost the same and most say that the Thailand’s palace is even better. Instead, try going to Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng Museum.

On the Killing Fields and the Genocide Museum, you’ll feel the remorse and depression of the place. You will see the skulls of the victims who were obviously bludgeoned to death in the head in order to save precious bullets. The site of the graves shows a field of thousands of bodies. The Genocide Museum was actually a former high school that was turned into a torture prison during the Khmer Rouge. There will be few times you will become teary-eyed seeing the faces of the people who were killed there and reading some of the stories from their surviving family members.

Best place to see sunrise is in the Angkor Wat and sunset at Phonm Bakeng.

Tip for a free entrance, learn one or two sentences in Khmer and master it. Then, while walking near the entrance, talk to the guard and tell them that you were a balikbayan Khmer, then you’ll have your free entrance.

Beng Melea, it’s a jungle temple ruins, just like on the movie Tomb Raider. There aren’t many tourists there.

If you’re going on Phnom Bakong, expect a long hike up and a big crowd with you. Trust me, it is better to see it in the morning when there are less people. But if you decide to be there at sunset, stay for a few minutes and let the crowd go down the hill first. A picture with the stones and temple ruins and the orange sun set color on the background, without the crowd, is great!

You should be able to get a tuktuk for just $10. Paying $20 is too much. You can have them outside the hotels and it’s not necessary to ask the travel agent when renting a tuktuk.

So if you just want to see the sites, take pictures and experience a glimpse of Cambodia’s past, you won’t be needing a guide. If you have a map and have done your research extensively, that would be sufficient. A Siem Reap “guidebook” which can be purchase from any local bookstore may serve as the guide as you go around.

        • Ax says:

Yey.

  22. J.Kulisap says:

    Hi All.

    Vote Wisely sabi ni Busyok

    • Ax says:

I don’t concur. I’ll vote according to my principles.

  23. dencios says:

maganda sa angkorwat. saka may mga temples dun made in parang lupa at rocks tas malawak siya. i just forgot the name. maganda dun ax. i enjoy mo. at nako, madamiiiing tao/tourists ka mag-ingat din

    • Ax says:

Oo nga po, sobrang mag-iingat ako at marami raw taso, both tourist at locals! Naku, nakakatakot naman! Haha. Ako pa ang natakot, eh! Yup, todo ingat na lang at diskarte! Mahirap na mawalan ng gamit pag nagtra-travel! Salamat sa advise!

  24. lovely says:

    sarap naman..
    pabaksyon2 na lang..
well sa trabaho mo kailangan yan hehe..
    mag sulit2 ka na..
    hanggat meron..

    napadaan lang..
    galing sa pag kakahimlay.

    • Ax says:

Salamat! Kailangan meron akong isang malayong lugar na napupuntahan every year. Kailangan pagsabayin ko yung responsibilidad ko as part of my family, work, at mga kaibigan. Kaya minsan ayaw ko na matulog. Haha.

      Salamat!

  25. kaye says:

    • kaye says:

hanep at talagang planado… good luck…kaya pala di ka makapag EB, ito pala ang sinasabi mong long vacay mo…sige lang, i believe you deserve it. :-)

      • Ax says:

One year or six months vacation nila. Waah. Nagulat ako! As in sobrang nagulat ako! Sabi ko, “we only have a couple of days vacation in the Philippines. It seems that our vacation are just hours for you guys.”

Nagto tour sila around Asia, mga German, Aussie at Swedish. Tsk, grabe, naiinggit talaga ako. Kungsabagay, malaki naman kase ang pera nila. Gusto ko na tuloy mag first world tong Philippines. Hay.

        • kaye says:

hmmm… i would assume that the tourists you met are europeans. sa europe kasi hindi bihira yung 4-day workweek sa kanila. ayaw nila mastress ang mga tao dahil sa work. hehehe… sa US kasi talagang mga workaholic dun…they have to take on 2 or 3 more jobs pa nga di ba.

  26. Tourist says:

I have gone to Cambodia, be wary. You need to be street smart on any place you will be going. Know their culture and at the same time learn their language and phrases like ‘thank you’ ‘you’re welcome’ ‘where’ ‘how much’ and the such. Spend time lurking around. Go out of your hotel and walk some blocks. Just an advise!

    Enjoy.

    • Ax says:

Ow, thanks Mr. Tourist! That’s what I did the last time! Selamat Datang and I forgot what else! Haha. Thanks for these tips! I’ll surely do these on my trips any where!

  27. bxjubahji says:

Yeah, we all need a vacation once in awhile. Cambodia is a good choice this time! The temples will bring you back to the time where people’s greatest fears are eclipse and meteors.

    Cambodia itinerary, anyone?!

    • Ax says:

      Itinerary, anyone?!

Way back hundred years, you give humanity an eclipse, they’ll be shouting “it’s the end of the world.”

Right now, give the world SARS, they’ll be shouting “we’ll conquer that disease.”

  28. Leveling ang gala ni Ax… hehehe… Cambodia na naman… :)

    At malapit na… :)

Ako, Pinas muna, unless may mangyaring maganda at mapadpad ako ng hangin sa ibang bansa…

    Batanes 2011, anyone? :)

    • Ax says:

Haha. Magnanakaw kase ako! Yey, pero joke lang!

Gusto ko pumunta sa Batanes. Pag nakikita ko sa TV yun, hay. Hay lang talaga ang nasasabi ko.

      Mahal kase ng pamasahe. Aw.

      • Hahaha…

Hehehe…

        • Ax says:

Yep, in the coming months, talagang i-e explore ko ang Pilipinas! Hehe!

Buti ka pa, may budget ka na! Haha, ako talagang walang wala pang budget. Kawawang bata!

Air Phil Express has a promo fare now to Naga. Maybe 1400 RT.

  30. Vajarl says:

Boss! Isama mo kameeeee!

  31. busyokology says:

aba at lalabas ka pala ng bansa.
    sama kami ni busyok!

  32. sows says:

    astig.

ang luho ng trip na to. huwaw.

  33. arnie says:

Wow!!! at out of the country talaga ang vacation trip mo…hehehe

kakayanin kaya yan ng aking budget…hmmmm atska wala pa pala akong passport…hahahaha

    :-) good day!!!

    • Ax says:

Kaya yan ng budget mo. Malaysia-Brunei namin, yakang yaka ng kahit sino dahil dumidiscount at nagresearch kami ng mura! Hehe.

  34. tsenn` says:

may nabasa akong mashed potato. yum!

bigatin. pasyal pasyal na lang. hehe. god bless your trip! (parang sa sign sa jeep? haha!)

  35. p0kw4ng says:

    • Ax says:

Ah, sige! Sure! Sure! Noong last time na nagtry ako ng foods ng mga local.. May nangyaring hindi maganda sa akin. Haha! Pero ayos lang! Kailangan ko talaga magdala ng Diatabs next time. Yay.

  36. blusparks says:

    • Ax says:

Atsaka, this project will take much time. Selection pa lang, medyo matagal na. Ang tantya ko, more than a year bago ma-publish ang libro or baka matagalan pa. Hehe.

      Euphoria. Makatulog na nga. Yey.
