Rice and Shine
Categories: Free Writing

It’s only yesterday that me and Jay R had the pictorial for the rice contest. Yeah, with a cup of rice, a white blanket and my untidy bedroom..  here’s two edited photos that we came up with. So what d’you like?

Maraming_Bigas_Ka_Pang_Kakainin

Give_Rice_on_Christmas_Day

One thing I realized. Do not ever ever take a pictorial after a four-hour practice of any physical activities.

I share. That would be the theme of the photo. Sharing our joy. Our happiness. Our life. Or simply sharing LOVE. To love something bigger, greater and beyond ourselves is giving love without conditions. These past few months, I was able to share my thoughts and my gift to the world. By writing/blogging, I am able to share my ideas. I am able to influence people. I am able to entertain them on my whatnots article. It felt good that I can share these little things with people whom I do not know personally, and later on becoming friends with them.

Last week, I was able to catch some air outside our house despite my busy schedule. A cold breeze touched my face.. and then a familiar song was played by my neighbor.

Why don’t you give love on christmas day (on Christmas day)
Oh, the man on the street and the couple upstairs
All need to know that there’s one who cares
Give love on Christmas day (on Christmas day)
No greater gift is there than love

This gives me the inspiration on the said photo. Replacing the word ‘love’ with ‘rice.’ Substituting an abstract concept to something palpable and something that is needed by many Filipinos mostly on rustic areas here in the Philippines. There are times when I would stay up late just to watch documentary shows and the topic would be starvation and hunger of our fellow kababayans. Those shows are an eye opener, and at least I know, on my part, that we have this problem. Sharing is the perfect weapon for us to fight the scarcity of food. And Christmas season means sharing.

But then it struck me, December 25 is not the only day we should celebrate Christmas.. because Christmas Day is everyday.. yes, Sharing Day is everyday.

shout your love for rice

love the first one ax… update me if may isesend ka na ha… thanks ax… ;-)

  2. yhen says:

  3. jason says:

    wahh late ako
    di ako first base!!

  4. J.Kulisap says:

But still, it’s yours. Go for what do you think is the best.

    • Ax says:

hm, what is better between the two.. Pagod nga ako.. Eto, matutulog na ako! Aw. Haha.

Seriously, minimalist kase ang theme namin diyan.. Jay R wanted na rice lang talaga ang nasa paligid ko.. so vibrant colors are eliminated. You can even observed on my shirt, pants and shoes.. Gusto namin ma-emphasize yung rice.

Meron kaming naisip na ‘Rice is Not Dead.’ I was supposed to be on a cemetery with a cross on my side.. pero wala na kaming oras.. may mga meaning naman yan.. lalo na yung Give Rice on Christmas Day. hehe.

      • hmmm… I am pained in saying na partly I agree with Kulisap here… :(

Masyadong minimalist… Maybe I expected something out of the box gaya ng ginawa ni MB, eherm, JayR pala sa shoot niyo sa American cemetery… :)

But if I have to really make a choice, I’d go with the second one. Minimalist din pero at least there is a certain play in depth of field between your face and the rice… :)

        • Ax says:

Haha. No worries.. Constructive criticisms are mostly welcome! Okay lang..Any comments be it may negative or positive!

You are going for symbolism, Kuya Mark, ehe!

Since ‘I Love Rice’ yung theme.. Pinalitan namin yung word na ‘love’ sa phrase na ‘Give love on Christmas day!’ I share. Yan ang theme ng second.

I am a messenger. I give message to the world. With the event PhilRice is making/doing/ and informing that there are part of the Philippines na walang makain.. So partly, lahat ng candidates for this project/contest ay isang messenger. We/They deliver messages of the rice situation here in our country.

MOreover, we also had a lighting problem that time. Lamp lang ng Daddy ko ginamit namin. Hehe.

          • J.Kulisap says:

I know how he works his crafts, so I don’t know.

Lack of preparation and materials I think.

            • Ax says:

Actually, hindi namin sinisisi that we lack those needed materials. Okay lang sa amin.. Kahit walang preparation at walang magagandang gadgets.. Kase while on my work, habang nirereview ko ang Progress Reports, Initial Examination, EMG/NCV study, Primary Treating Physician’s Comprehensive Report ng isang pasyente, eh nag-iisip na rin ako ng ideas.. as well as Jay R. Okay lang kahit simpleng camera.. Natuwa lang kami sa resulta.

          • Actually, Ax, for me as a photographer, walang problema sa lighting and composition.

When I said it was very minimalistic, I meant na kulang ang visual elements or elements of design (line, color, shape, form, texture, patterns) to make it a striking photograph…

Seriously, in art there are really no rules. Its limit is alway self-expression.

At hindi lang siguro talaga ako minimalistic… Hehehe…

            • Ax says:

Haha.. Yeah, Me and Jay R believe that art has no boundaries too..

Hm, grabe.. Naguguluhan na ako.. Mas magulo pala ang voting system.. hindi ko pa rin alam Kuya Mark kung anong ipapasa ko for the contest.

Minsan may pagkamagarbo ako. Minsan naman gusto ko minimalist lang. Parang yung theme ng blog ko ngayon! Hehe. Minimalist lang! Yay. Pero minsan gusto ko bonggang bongga!

  5. alkapon says:

HIndi ba pwede isali ang kamote?.. nangangamote na kasi ako.. he he he

  6. cyberpat says:

  7. lovely says:

    nice shot ax..
    may effort talaga ..
akin na lang ung bigas hehe..

  8. sandi says:

Hi Ax! haha..nakakatuwa yung unang photo..
    pahinging bigas ;)

    • Ax says:

Haha. NFA po yang bigas na yan! Aw. Hm, unang photo! Thanks Kuya Sandi!

    parang nakekelam nako ah hahaha.

    • Ax says:

Salamat Lee! Maganda yung idea mo.. Actually, nasa akin nga yung problema. Hehe. Di ako masyado nakapag experiment sa shots! Kumot ko kase yung tinatapakan ko! Haha. Salamat sa idea, next time gagalingan ko! Aw.

Ayos ba? Halata bang mahirap pumili?? hhehehehe

      • Ax says:

Salamat Kuya Bong! Hm.. Okay! Ang hirap pumili.. Nahihirapan na ako.. Aw.

        Symbolism versus Aesthetics.

Waah. Ow, sana nakauwi ka ng maayos. Maraming salamat sa two cents mlo sa picture! Opo, I love rice yung theme ala fan sign. Aw.

  12. laboyboy says:

  16. Mr Nonsense says:

or yung binabayaran mo yung PUTO? ;)

  17. .poOt! says:

    kuya ax.

kung ako ang tatanungin mo, both are nice. but i’ll prefer the second one. GIVE RICE ON CHRISTMAS DAY. —-> i love it.

  18. wolf says:

given the circumstances (poor lighting (have to use my in-camera flash since I have no money to buy a decent flash or extra cash to fix my entry-level SB-400), less-than-an-hour photoshoot which means everything is impromptu and DIY (from backdrop, extra lightning (for fill-in and eye catch-light)and the mere fact that I have to do it after work (read: rushing to get to Ax’s house from the hell-traffic of Ayala), I am happy about the outcome(s).

It is good that you can get to do something beyond your normal routine… :D And of course to practice the craft.

    • Ax says:

I love the photos, Jay R. Thanks to you.

Yeah given the circumstances.. And I do not want to boast. But its like we were given an exact money to buy a 12-oz soft drinks, but we were able to purchase a litro.

Jay R found me in a yellow sando sweating myself in front of the computer bloghopping every blogger who commented on my blog.. I have only little time to comment back on each commenter on my post, so those people who had gone to my blog are my priority.

Jay R, I know, had not had his dinner yet. I also had not had my dinner as I am awaiting him for the photoshoot. Using only a dirty-white blanket that has holes on some part, a masking tape, and a cup of rice.. and not to mention a forest room (of mine) we were able to pull off a nice edited photo.

We were happy because given those circumstances, me after a dance practice and Jay R after a bumper-to-bumper traffic at the highway.. and those in betweens. dang we were really tired. but we still have the results as amazing. :)

i am just storytelling and this comment is not meant for those who had given constructive criticisms.

every comment here is really appreciated.

probably, i am just nostalgic of how we do our deadline-tomorrow projects way back high school, with a periodical examination first thing in the morning.
      :)

  19. eli says:

i love the 1st pix. galing. bet ko yan! hehe

pero maganda yong ‘give rice on Christmas day’

    • Ax says:

      Nakakalito yung mga comment niyo.

      Gusto ko yung first pic.

      PERO maganda rin yung second.

Aw.

    • Ax says:

‘Maraming Bigas Ka Pang Kakainin’ is a 1994 Philippine movie starring Eddie Garcia, Rustom Padilla and Gloria Diaz.

It is an idiomatic expression same as ‘papunta ka pa lang, pabalik na ako’ which become famous as a movie title also.

Since, wanting to put the word ‘Bigas’ in the middle of the phrase to catch attention and to make it a unique fansign, that is how it was made.

Maraming BIGAS ka pang kakainin. Maraming LARO ka pang lalaruin. Maraming PAGSUBOK ka pang susuungin. Either of the two sentences.. both phrases were correct..

To call it as ‘ours,’ just like Kuya Mark have said.. No boundaries.

  21. Kurog says:

Aw… Pwedeng none of the above? Ehehe… Yung second photo sana eh.. Kaso sana pinaka-blur mo pa yung mukha mo… Wahaha! peace Kuya Ax!

Oops! buti nalang, napansin ko… Muntik ulit kita matawag na Kuya Tsi! Ehehe…

    • Ax says:

Oo, pwedeng none of the above tapos iba block ko na yang IP address mo dito! Yay.

Oks, yung second photo.

  22. kaye says:

I like the second one better than the first kasi mas artistic ang shot.

  23. Aina ♥ says:

    • Ax says:

Kaya yan. Aha! Gumaganon pa ako!

Wag kabahan.. Matalo o manalo, magaling ka pa rin! Salamat sa boto mo!
