Stirring Insomnia Every Midnight DJ

midnightdjA few hours later, it will be midnight, will I turn the radio on and request a song to the DJ or will I watch a TV? Well, I decided that I wanted to watch any show a cable television has to offer and I wanted something to drink while I do that so I went to the kitchen. I don’t drink coffee much but I love Batangas’ kapeng barako especially if it’s brewed by my mom. And since I am so much of a couch potato, I would love to sip that coffee in a Buddha-sitting style position while I watch television shows.

While gulping a so-hot coffee, I inadvertently pressed the remote control and realized I am now watching a show of TV5. I remembered it was Paolo Contis back then, right now it was Oyo Boy Sotto who plays the title role of the said series.

I sipped again, this time, the coffee is a little cold.

I like to make a review out of it, may be because I missed my college years when I have to make an assessment about this and that, and I missed doing some research and assignments. And you are wrong if you are thinking I miss school, I still not. I just like to do something, something that is synonymous of “project making.”

And so, I started this little assignment.

Midnight DJ is a show of TV5, a horror/suspense series where a disc jockey, Samboy (Oyo Boy), working at LXFM at New City Radio tries to find solution to paranormal stories of his listeners. Though Samboy is not equipped with extra sensory perception ability, he is dedicated to helping people and also ‘the others’ to find answers and to solve mysteries of their encounter.

I checked the two shows of the other networks with the same timeslot, Saturdays at 8:00 pm. The attack of the other networks is comedy-reality, while the other one is drama. Pretty cool because three choices of format-genre is being offered to the market. Thinking of the time as 8:00 pm, this show’s major viewers are probably teenagers which would conflict with the viewers of the comedy-reality show being aired by the other network in the same timeslot. Now it is getting complicated. I say no need to change the timeslot as there is a need to consider what airs before 8:00 pm and after 9:00 pm. Also, no need to change the day as Saturday is the day teenagers have their most time watching television. I know because I was once a teenager!

I like Philippine mythology and the said show never ceases to offer that flavor to their viewers. Although, I would like my Philippine mythology with a twist of future-thing and arts as what Budjette Tan and Kajo Baldisimo is doing on their comic book, Trese. I hope Midnight DJ can introduce new characters that Filipinos are noted for. Remember the I Love You computer virus made by a Filipino that even the Pentagon, CIA and the British Parliament had to shut down their system to stop the spread of the virus? What if that becomes a palpable humanoid organism spreading havoc, and the only way to kill ‘that monster’ is for it to be loved. Nice, right? A valentine special. Hoho.

Anyways, that is what I think of the show.

Uhm, one more thing, do you think I should stop drinking kapeng barako? Because every time a shocking event happened on the show, I tend to lose grip of my coffee?!

Do you think milk would be okay while watching a television?

i haven’t watched midnight DJ yet, masyado na akong maraming TV series na fina-follow lol.. Prison break, Heroes, smallville, One Tree Hill, etc. hehe

i haven’t tasted kapeng barako yet.. but i am a self-confessed coffee addict! i’ve been trying my best to make a halt to that addiction kasi bigla na lang akong nagkakanerbyos na walang dahilan. lol

well, to much of anything is bad! ;)

    • Ax says:

yeah, foreign series are a click sa mga teenagers ngayon. i am also following heroes and grey’s anatomy. although i think we, us bloggers, should also help Philippine industry.. be it may on film, products, or whatnots!

  2. MOn says:

at base na naman ako! haha! i think i deserve a prize parekoy! hehe

  3. bluguy says:

    • Ax says:

thanks kuya blu! ow, what do you mean by bagong concept?

talaga? pinapanood mo pala yang show na yan kahit nasa Roma ka pa!

      • bluguy says:

        • Ax says:

I agree. The ordinary, the simple. Although in fairness to the show, they did have stories which is unique. I find the retoke quite scary and original.

          • bluguy says:

  4. AX, hanap mo sa you tube ang film na “Taken”, by liam neeson, tyak di ka makatulog,
    nakaka affect na film.

    • Ax says:

Ok, Ate Francesca.. Searching it. “Taken.”

Huwaw, “Taken” by Pierre Morel. Gawdy. I am loving the trailer. Kelan kaya ito ipapalabas?! Something of.. Ow, can’t even write what I want to say! Something of suspense action! Galing! Natutuwa ako. Parang ang daming twists!

      • Carpal Tunnel says:

I saw the trailer too. A mix of Push and Mission Impossible! Loving it also!

      • Ax says:

Ow, mali ako! 2008 movie pala siya! Di ko man lang namalayan na it was shown in theaters nationwide! Kung hindi ko pa sinearch sa wikipedia and ask my officemates, I would not know!

        • Carpal Tunnel says:

i also watched the Midnight DJ trailer, ayos ah! ganda ng effects nila! i didn’t know TV5 can produced such show!

  5. Shannen says:

i haven’t seen the show.. and im looking forward to spend my rainy nights watching scary, ha ha! i hope that makahulog mug din ako!

  6. Carpal Tunnel says:

Because every team needs a funny character, I like Erich on the series! I like her at the state when her ESP is triggered!

    • Ax says:

Yeah, it’s like Naruto on team Kakashi, or Shaggy in Scooby-Doo.

I also enjoy seeing Erich, or Chicklet, when she is having an ESP moment!

  7. donna says:

Yup yup yup!i also lyk Midnight Dj.i enjoy watching d cast especially seeing Oyo Sotto in a new look w/c is refreshing for him…D story is not d typical type na nkakasawa panoorin…

    • Ax says:

It’s a new Oyo Boy indeed. I remember his late afternoon shoes way back which is so cheesy.

Hm, I assume you like horror and suspense genre! Thanks for the comment, Donna!

  8. ener says:

    (chatting with you..here’s your comment)

Cant really establish solid attention to these type of flicks so i I guess I’ll thaw the tip of the iceberg: LAME. Guess Im so sick with seeing OyO Boy (he’s not really my type, nor does anyone I know haha..)

Plus, the vivid demo of IM-COPYING-CONCEPTS-FROM-ONE-AMERICAN-SHOW-I-KNOW is Pinoy Retarded. COPYCAT. Well I do appreciate that somehow somebody dared to inject a “fresher” dose to Philippine TV. But that doesnt change the fact that the story line couldnt make a credible turnstile to allow todays young minds to shy away from Koreanovela motherfuc***s.

What this tv needs is a RADICAL.

    • ener says:

…and im not a fan of coffee either. Got this from news last night (while on slumber party with amiah, jen, and ella… yes! threesome! well rod was there of course, but we are’nt anyway between any’s legs hahaha! cut the crap) <-misguided opinion

says in the news: coffee drinkers among women pose higher risk of cleft palate (bingot) on kids while on course of pregnancy. It has nothing to do with you however. Indulge and drown.

      • Ax says:

nice, post this on I Learn Something New Everyday at chicken!

fyi, i am not a fan of lame coffee. its kapeng barako, dude! kapeng barako!

    • Ax says:

Knowing you, ener! You will rather watch Watchmen or Xmen series. Yeah, its Oyo Boy. At least it is not Piolo Pascual! Er! Well Asian invasion is Asian invasion. Anime and Asian flick stories. It’s everywhere.

One concept branching to different stories and characters. I believe a ‘twist’ will make a difference!

  9. vangie says:

Though if given the chance, I don’t think mapapanood ko pa rin yan kasi Studio23 ako eh. Ax, di mo binanggit what kind of show dun. Also, parang di ako magiging interesado, feeling ko lang. Is it because of age???
I Love You computer virus… it just shows Pinoy can be either famous or notorious internationally!
    Proud to be Pinoy! haha

    • Ax says:

Ah, ganun ba. Kaya palan nung nasa Batangas ako either GMA or ABS CBN lang ang pinapanood nila. So ang Studio23 ay malinaw dyan?!

Siguro nga its because of age. Would you mind to clarify the question ‘what kind of show?’ para I can edit the article and add some info, ate vange!

Pinoy are international, that’s what I believe! Have a nice night!

      • vangie says:

i was just pointing out na di mo mention un show sa Studio23. un kasi pinapanood ko eh described mo un sa 2 networks. would you believe, request un anak ko sa GMA watch pero di ko pinagbibigyan. such a bad mother, hehe
at parang sinabi mo na mas matanda ako sayo at emphasized mo pa ha, ate…
        awesome blog axe!

  10. Den Relojo says:

I haven’t seen Midnight DJ, but I won’t watch it either. I think those kind of shows are silly since they reinforce beliefs about beings which do not exist at all.

    • Ax says:

It is inevitable to separate fiction from art. And this kind of story is an art, just like the KingKong or the Harry Potter or the Twilight Movie. If it is worth watching, why not watch it, rightee?!

Mapanood nga yang sinasabi mo, Ax, at naiintriga ako!

You have a point there. It is an art. Good day.

  11. Jay Pulmano says:

Still wasn’t able to watch that series, been planning to spend time watching it for weeks now but I do always forget to do so. Miss ko na kapeng barako cuz! It’s been a long time since iv’e sipped one(me patay pa). Also watch Heroes but till’ S3 EP09 lang ako. Till then…

Let it be so; And it will always have been.

    • Ax says:

Haha. Honga, may patay pa back then. Why? last time ba when Jew’s wedding di ka coffee breakfast?

Ow, may be I’ll give you an alarm if its already 8pm, Saturday! Hehe.

      And so, Let it be.

  12. Allen says:

“What if that becomes a palpable humanoid organism spreading havoc, and the only way to kill ‘that monster’ is for it to be loved. Nice, right? A valentine special. Hoho.”

Kapag may ginagawa ako late at night, nakaka-3 mugs ako ng 3-in-1. hehe.

    • Ax says:

You think so?! Ang iniisip ko is the opposite. Something so beautiful, and not so human. Pero there’s a catch of the virus humanoid — him being so perfect, he seems like a robot and does not have feelings. Parang ganun!

Ow, hindi naman ako masyado sa kape. As I said, if it is brewed BY MY MOM ONLY. So at work, di ako nagkakape! H20 lang ng H20!

  13. plaridel says:

i don’t think drinking milk is a good idea. stick with coffee. you don’t want to end up crying over spilled milk, do you? :)

  14. brotherutoy says:

  15. PM says:

LOL tagal pa valentines ax. i’ve never seen that show hindi kasi ako fan ng tv masyado eh. but i also like filipino mythology. as for your coffee, baka naman antukin ka agad pag milk ang ininom mo di mo na natapos yung mga tv show mo LOL

    • Ax says:

Ako, I love books about Philippine Mythology, natutuwa ako pag nagbabasa ako about our culture in a fiction way and being told by Lola Basyang, or our grand parents!

I believe Midnight DJ should present 75% of stories about Philippine Myth of course with a twist.

  16. azul says:

    • Ax says:

funny thing about me is that i don’t drink coffee at work. you will see me drinking juice drinks or water lang!

why not try watching the show? you might enjoy it! ow, watch it with someone, you might enjoy it more! hehe.

  17. sixtinyne69 says:

FYI: Last Saturday, May 9, Midnight DJ got a 12.8 per cent rating, which is the second highest for TV5. It is higher compare to what the other more popular primetime shows managed to get that week (e.g. Going Bulilit 12.1; Ms. Earth-Phil 10.9; Pinoy Bingo Nights 10.0; Cool Center 8.3; SNBO 10.5). In addition, Talentadong Pinoy got 17.0 rating, which is just 0.1 per cent shy of The Singing Bee’s 17.1. I really wish more people would watch and support TV5, and I hope that they will continue to produce more unique and inventive local shows which are different from what the other two giant networks are offering. (By the way, I got the ratings from PEP.ph.)

    • Ax says:

So that is the rating of May 9! Thanks dude! Huwaw, galing mo naman mag summarize! Talentadong Pinoy pala ang highest rated show ng TV5 (last Saturday). Thanks, dude sa info! Midnight DJ is actually doing good and is being a threat to the 2 Big Network’s shows.

Bat di ka pumasok sa opis?

  18. hani says:

i read ung summary ng bawat episode sa wikipedia.. mejo nakornihan ako eh.. but i guess i have to see the show first, right? kaya lang ayoko!!! takot ako sa mga horror ng pinoy eh..

  19. JP says:

Hi, I thought Midnight DJ is a program sa FM radio, and its timeslot, of course, 12MN. AM WRONG! This is a tv program pala sa TV5-shake ko tv ko…

Well, I haven’t watched a single episode yet of the said TV program, so I can’t comment about the show’s quality.

Sige, papanoorin ko yan. Sure, sa Saturday right?!

Regarding to your question about drinking kapeng barako, it’s better to try Blend 45, I believe meron pa eto sa market. Since you are watching a suspense/thriller/horror show, you should drink a blended coffee (blended coffee ba ang Blend 45?) so you wouldn’t tend to overact…

    • Ax says:

Research ko na rin sa Wiki or sa google about the said show…

  20. Lionheart says:

    Sanayan lang iyan….

Try mo sanayin ang sarili mo na makatulog without the help of anything…. Hindi kasi maganda ang ganyan.

  21. Vanessa says:

meron palang ganung show? di ko lam…la kasi nyan sa bundok…heheh… though i wanted to watch the show takot ako sa mga horror movies coz sometimes napapaginipan ko pa un.

sige, i will definitely watch Midnight DJ to conquer my fears.

  22. jeniffer says:

I do love the kapeng barako of batangas.. sobrang malasa talaga, puro kumbaga.. Oh I don’t watch TV5 pero sabi nila improve na daw,, love creepy stories..anyway..

  23. livingstain says:

  25. A62 says:

i love coffee especially Batangas coffee. there’s nothing like it, i tell you. whenever i sip one it rejuvenates me. it’s even better when drinking it in a mug, wow. anyways, like ax i do drink coffee while watching tv. i got one tip for you ax whenever you’re watching midnight dj, put you mug down you might spill it to yourself.

  26. livingstain says:

napadaan lang, kasi gusto kong dumaan. toinkz!

  27. dong ho says:

sounds very interesting! i enjoy horror movies. i might love this too. hindi ko to alam.

  28. Melvin says:

I remembered watching the show for the first time.. I saw it on the commercials on the newly released TV5 and the lead actor was still Paolo Contis. the commercial that aired was so scary that i really intended to watch it..

back then.. every monday night, i always go home early eventhough my place is far. i watch the show together with my brother and i remember seeing my small brother saying that i dont leave him at the sala.. hehe

but as time passed by, the plot of the stories that were being told suddenly declined. i really liked the first few releases of the show, back when paolo contis was still the lead.

the current stories where not that scary and i even laughed for a moment when two or three of their stories told about a pedicad, a kariton, and a pair of slippers taht killed a human being.

hmm.. i recommend the show to everyone eventhough of its shallow theme. they infused comedy to it that gave the factor of watching it over other shows with the same airtime.

    • Ax says:

thanks melvin! hehe. yeah, it was paolo contis back then but due to contract signing of paolo at the other station, he has to give up midnight dj..! salamat sa comments!

    • Shannen says:

wehhh! papakwento na lan ako sa yo melvin so that i can catch up on the story!

ok i’ll watch it na lang every saturday!
